A Gradual, a liturgical book of texts and music of chants sung by the choir in response to the celebrant of the Mass, written in a secretarial hand in black ink, with 4-line staves in red.  Versal initials are painted in red, green, and yellow.  Rubrics written in Latin and German.  150 leaves, a few missing and a few loose.  This is a very fine object with binding of leather over large wooden boards.  Two brass clasps.  4 brass bosses on front and back. The bosses are metal knobs that slightly elevate the book from the table surface, protecting the leather from wear.  These were features of medieval bookbinding, but also used later as decorative features.  Generally in good condition but with water damage here and there.  Size: 18 x 12 inches.
