M4792 Presentation in the Temple, Gold Leaf and Tempera on Vellum, Circle of the Master of Robert Gaguin, Paris, late 15th c. A large arch-topped miniature with full border of acanthus and flowers in liquid gold and tempera. The illumination is attributed to the Circle of the Master of Robert Gaquin who collaborated occasionally with the Master of Jacques de Besançon. The painter was named after a sumptuous presentation copy for King Charles VIII of Robert Gaguin’s French translation of Julius Caesar’s De bello Galfico. The Master of Robert Gaguin specialized in large historical works and Books of Hours made for members of the French Royal Circle. In this illustration the Virgin presents the Christ-child to Simeon who is dressed in gold and blue. Anna holds the offering of turtle doves. Size: 6 x 4 1/4 inches.
