  • M6355 Processional, of Augustinian Use, in Latin, decorated manuscript on parchment [Italy, late fifteenth century]
68 leaves, complete, collation: i-vi8, vii-viii10, single column of 10 lines in a large ornamental late gothic bookhand, capitals in ornate penstrokes and touched in dark-caramel-yellow, rubrics and instructions to various actors in liturgy in red, a few large red initials with spaces left for other initials (tiny hairline guide-initials present), 163 by 120mm.; early binding of dark leather, tooled with leaf-fronds set within frames and chevrons, over bevelled wooden boards, thongs separated from front board, traces of thirteenth-century manuscript reused as pastedowns (now only offset) and as spine strengtheners, remnants of two clasps, scuffs to outer binding

The addressing of the rubric of an ordo on fol. 21r to the fratrum heremitarum sancti augustini, suggests that this pocket volume was produced for use in a community of Augustinians. It includes instructions and readings for a number of common offices, and ends with some later additions, including a near-contemporary Ordo processionis and prayers, both in smaller script.
