  • M6414 Small frisket fragment , cut from a French thirteenth-century choirbook, on parchment [France, thirteenth century]

Long thin strip cut laterally from a bifolium from a choirbook, with remains of two leaves with single columns, and 2 lines of music and 1 line of text in high grade early gothic bookhand, the edges of the cutting at top and bottom marked by ends of rows in red ink from the piece’s reuse as a frisket, then reused in a binding, 210 by 47 mm.

Friskets are an important witness to the early printing of books in both red and black ink. The frisket itself is the sheet of material which lies between the paper and the print block on an early printing press, and which masks off all but the red rubrics. From a British private collection.
