A charming miniature from a Book of Hours in Latin, on vellum. Heavy Gothic script in dark brown ink with very unusual rubrics in blue. Two-line initials in gold leaf on a ground of blue and burgundy with white tracery. The small miniature shows St. Luke with his emblem (an ox). He is seated with book on his lap and holding a quill. The illuminator, Philippe of Guelders is also known as the Master of the Chronique Scandaleuse after a copy of Jean de Roye’s work now in the Bibliothèque Nationale de France. Size: 162 x 111 mm.
